Is there a way I can download and install the latest Vista-compatible
version of GraphEdit/GraphEdt without installing the whole Vista SDK?

I've enjoyed using GraphEdit as an educational tool to help me understand
the rendering process, but I have no intention of developing my own
applications.

Since the multimedia architecture of Vista is dramatically different from
previous Windows versions, is GraphEdit still even a useful tool to see how
files can be rendered?

You do not need to install the SDK: just decompress it, copy
graphedt.exe and proppage.dll somewhere and regsvr32
proppage.dll. Or you can find it floating in the web...

There is no dramatic difference in Vista: Vista still uses
what was already used in XP, including DirectShow (which is
what GraphEdit is based upon). Only for a very specific task
(that is, playing WindowsMedia content in
WindowsMediaPlayer) Vista uses the new MediaFoundation.

That is a great tip. But there is a problem. There is nothing like a
DirectShow SDK now. GraphEdit has disappeared with it. I looked in windows
sdk and DirectX sdk (NOV 2008) I could not find it. I am also looking for a
great sample app called VMRMulti but don't seem to be able to put my hands on
it. Any ideas how I can get my hands on thsi great tool which will run on
windows XP professional and Vista alike.

There never was a DirectShow SDK. Around 1998, the
DirectShow SDK was part of the DirectXMedia SDK 6.0, then it
was merged into the DirectX SDK and, since 2005, it is part
of the Windows SDK. If you download a copy of the Windows
SDK (any version is OK), you will get the DirectShow docs,
tools and samples, including GraphEdit. Notice that the
Windows SDK is not the Platform SDK, which is older. The
VMRMulti sample I think was lost when DirectShow was merged
into the Windows SDK, so you need an edition version of the
DirectX SDK v9.0b from 2003 (maybe 2004).

I found that in my research before posting, but for my needs payware seemed
unnecessary. I was also unsure whether it was compatible with Vista's
"Media Foundation", but Alessandro clarified that. Thanks for the
suggestion.
